Anti-Gone俺抬杠?!
2025, New York
In this bilingual reimagining of Sophocles’ Antigone, the ancient question of burial, loyalty, and state power is relocated to rural northern China, where family duty collides with political memory, social order, and the stubborn refusal to forget. Anti-Gone 俺抬杠?! transforms a canonical Greek tragedy into a sharp, earthy, and darkly comic Chinese family argument — one where grief is never private, and mourning itself becomes an act of defiance.
At the center of the play is a woman who refuses to let power decide what can be remembered. Around her, siblings, elders, ghosts, officials, animals, and mythic figures gather in a world where tragedy and farce constantly interrupt each other. The adaptation moves between Mandarin and English, ritual and argument, folk humor and political dread, creating a theatrical language that is both deeply Chinese and deliberately unstable.
The title Anti-Gone 俺抬杠?! plays with resistance, disappearance, and the Chinese phrase “抬杠” — to argue, to push back, to refuse easy agreement. In this version, Antigone is not only a heroic dissenter, but also a woman shaped by family history, rural speech, generational trauma, and the everyday absurdity of survival. Her rebellion is not abstract; it is physical, domestic, stubborn, and dangerously alive.
In a Northern Chinese village in the 1980s, on the final day of a three-day burial ceremony, the mourning hall becomes a battleground.
Polynikes, the eldest son of the Oedipus family, lies in his casket, but his spirit lingers in the human world. His late brother Eteocles waits to escort him into the afterlife. Meanwhile, their surviving sisters are at odds. Antigone refuses to honor the brother she despises, and Ismene tries to keep her from causing more trouble. At the same time. Polynikes' young children attempt to force their way into the adult world with their own childishly almighty will.
What should have been a solemn funeral spirals into chaos.
Welcome to this sinkhole of a mourning hall.
