In the Lower East Side and Chinatown, stories live in gardens, sidewalks, senior centers, shelters, kitchens, and shared public spaces. Everybody Has a Story to Tell brings those voices into the open: Chinese seniors, new migrant families, housing-insecure artists, unhoused neighbors, and community members whose lives often shape the neighborhood without being fully heard.

Written by Obie Award-winning playwright Carmen Rivera and based on stories shared through community workshops, the play asks what it means to listen across language, age, displacement, and difference. It is not theater that observes a community from the outside, but theater made through encounter — through time spent listening, gathering, translating, returning, and building trust.

Presented as a free multilingual community play in Lower East Side and Chinatown gardens, Everybody Has a Story to Tell turns public space into a stage for recognition and repair. Surrounded by art-making workshops and food justice programming, the production invites audiences not only to watch, but to enter a shared civic act: to hear someone else’s life with attention, tenderness, and responsibility.
