Measure for Measure

2025, New York

Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure begins with a city in moral crisis: laws have gone unenforced, desire has been pushed underground, and power returns disguised as virtue. When the Duke leaves Vienna in the hands of the rigid Angelo, a young man is sentenced to death for sex outside marriage, and his sister Isabella is forced into an impossible bargain between mercy, chastity, justice, and survival.

This production approached the play not as a distant moral comedy, but as a living argument about authority, hypocrisy, and the performance of righteousness. Who gets to define virtue? What happens when the law becomes a theater of control? And how do women survive in a world where their bodies, voices, and reputations are constantly negotiated by men in power?

At the center of the production was the unsettling theatricality of judgment itself. Public morality becomes performance; punishment becomes spectacle; mercy becomes a political gesture. The play’s world is one where everyone is watching, acting, hiding, confessing, testing, or being tested — and where the line between justice and manipulation becomes increasingly unstable.

For me, working on Measure for Measure was a meaningful opportunity to explore Shakespeare through dramaturgy, power analysis, and contemporary performance. The production asked how a canonical text can reveal the systems still operating around us: gendered authority, institutional hypocrisy, sexual politics, and the dangerous intimacy between morality and control.
